Dear Maine activists- Today is International Women's Day, and the AIUSA government relations department has asked us to make some phone calls to our Senators this week on an issue related to Women's Rights. We are being asked to call and request support for two bills that were introduced in the last Congress and now must be reintroduced. We are also asking them to cosponsor both bills. Both Senators were cosponsors of IVAWA in the last session, so this should be an easy ask. I have included below the phone numbers of the Senators, a one paragraph ask you can do on the phone, and question/answers on what IVAWA and the Tribal Law and Order Act are. I know this makes for a long email and you certainly don't have to go through it all, but for those who want more information I wanted to make it available. I would appreciate it if you would let me know if you make a call. Just reply to this email saying yes or no and that will be sufficient. Thanks for your help. What You Should Say

As your constituent, I am calling to ask you to support initiatives that will stop violence against women.

I am calling to urge the senator to cosponsor the Tribal Law and Order Act after it has been re-introduced and cosponsor the International Violence Against Women Act after it has been re-introduced.

Millions of women and girls experience acts of violence every day, including rape, domestic violence, female genital cutting, so-called honor killings, and acid burnings. Approximately one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, raped or otherwise abused in her lifetime. In the US, Native American women are two and a half times more likely to be raped or sexually assaulted in their lives than women in general in this country. By supporting these pieces of legislation you can help stop violence against women.

Please let me know if I can count on the Senator to support these bills
